<p>Eating Vegetables</p>
<p>It should be varied, as you should eat 2 1/2 cups of them each day. Eating dark vegetables, such as broccoli and spinach should be what you eat most. Carrots and sweet potatoes are great for you also. Try to eat more dry beans like pinto beans, kidney beans and even peas.</p>
<p>Eating Grains</p>
<p>You should eat approximately 6 ounces of grains a day. You should eat 3 ounces of whole grain cereals, rice, breads, or pasta. Ounce of grains is contained in a single slice of bread, or bowl of cereal.</p>
<p>Eating Fruits</p>
<p>Fruit is a very important part of your diet. You should eat at least 2 cups per day. Eat a variety of fruits such as fresh, dried canned, or even canned fruit. Drinking fruit juice is great for you also, but you should drink fruit juice in moderation.</p>
<p>Drinking Milk</p>
<p>Milk is highly calcium rich. Adults should drink up to 3 cups per day. Children should drink around 3 cups per day. When you choose milk products or yogurt, low fat products should be what you choose. If you don&#8217;t like milk or can&#8217;t drink it, you can choose lactose free products. You can find other sources of calcium such as fortified<br />foods and drinks.</p>

<p>5 ounces of beans and meats everyday is what you should aim to achieve. When you eat meat it is recommended bake it, broil it, or grill it, as this will stop extra fat from adding to the equation. Also vary your protein as well, with more chicken, fish, beans, and nuts.</p>
<p>While cooking food, limit the amount of solid fats such as butter, margarine, and lard. While these foods will add flavor to your meals, they will also raise your cholesterol. </p>
<p>To help contain saturated fat, trans fat, and your sodium low, you should read the nutrition labels on the food you purchase. These labels are found on the food package and they will explain to you the information you need to know about the food you are buying.</p>
<p>So if you pick your foods wisely and watch what you eat, you&#8217;ll help control your lifestyle. Exercise is great for you, and it goes along perfect with eating healthy. After all, with the busy lifestyles of today’s generation, cooking healthy meals are usually out of the question. But is it possible to eat healthy in today’s world of greasy French fries and oily double-burgers?</p>
<p>The rising health concerns and awareness of the need for good nutrition are being countered daily by the convenience offered by the many fast food restaurants available. After all, with the busy lifestyles of today’s generation, cooking healthy meals are usually out of the question. But is it possible to eat healthy in today’s world of greasy French fries and oily double-burgers? </p>
<p>Although fast food chains are known for fatty food, there are still ways in which you can choose the lesser evil. Here are the things you can keep in mind: </p>
<p>1. Under normal circumstances, vegetables are healthier than animal products, and healthier also than anything processed. When choosing a side dish, given the choice between salad greens and macaroni salad, if you like the taste of leafy vegetables, take it. Although they may both come with fatty dressing, at least you manage to opt out of the meat content in the pasta salad. </p>
<p>2. If you are ordering a burger, reducing the garnishing will really spell a big difference. For example, opting out of the extra cheese, extra mayonnaise, and extra mustard can save you lots of calories. You will shake your head when you realize the calories laden in ketchup and mayonnaise. If you really want plenty put on your burger, choose vegetables like lettuce or tomato. Interestingly, the plain slices will do you more good compared to coleslaw, since this already comes with much mayonnaise. </p>
<p>3. You can opt out of the sugar-laden sodas by asking for drinking water instead. Restaurants serve drinking water, and you can make it taste better by loading up on the ice. If you really cannot forego soft drinks, you can opt for the smaller cup and down the rest of your thirst with water. The smaller serving size, when done consistently, can mean a lot. If you can opt for fruit juice, it may be better, but be sure it is 100% fruit juice, since a juice drink comes with very little actual fruit juice content and is usually richly laden with sugar. Try to avoid milkshakes and soda floats as much as possible. </p>
<p>4. If you eat at fast food chains everyday, you can try varying it up with a day or two eating at a different outlet, such as the office cafeteria, or a lesser-known restaurant. At least you can explore your options for healthier food. </p>
<p>5. If the fast food offers choices that utilize whole-wheat bread, be sure to pick that. Whole-grains are always healthier than processed breads. Also, unprocessed foods will always be the healthier option. For example, if you can choose between a baked potato and mashed potato or French fries, the better choice is the baked potato.</p>
<p>6. Cooking method is also an important factor. Frying always translates into greater amount of oil. Your best bet is boiled or baked. Although fast foods rarely boil anything, baked is a possible option. Like in the previous example, a baked potato will naturally be healthier than French fries. </p>
<p>7. If you are used to eating dessert and refuse to go without it, go for the smaller servings. For example, if you want a large hot-fudge sundae but can be satisfied with a simple ice cream cone, the ice cream cone will definitely save you more calories. If the option is a brownie and a brownie ala mode, or one that comes with scoops of ice cream, you can pick the simple brownie, unless for some dire reason you really want to eat ice cream, in which case you can just get the ice cream cone instead of suffering the calorie content of both. </p>
<p>Once you put these principles into practice, you can see that fast food chains really are not the enemy but are indeed there for your convenience. The choice still lies with you, and you can still eat healthy even if you depend on fast foods for your daily meals. Once you realize that restaurants do not have to be avoided altogether, you will even feel more confident about your sense of control, giving you a greater propensity to eat nutritious meals compared to when you feel that you are helpless when faced with fast food menus. </p>

How does a mother make meals healthier at home for her loved ones, especially when the family prefers to buy take-out on the way home? Here are some tips on how to incorporate take-out meals that children are familiar with into healthier alternatives:</p>
<p>1.Rotisserie chicken is a relatively healthy take-out food since it is roasted and not fried. But you can transform this boring takeout dish into a healthier choice by getting the skin off. You can then chop the meat and put it into roll-your-own burritos, mixed with rice, tomatoes, and other vegetables. This makes the activity fun enough to grab the kids’ attention, and teach them a little about food preparation.</p>
<p>2. Chinese takeout usually spells food high in oils. If you want, you can toss in some more greens into the usual noodles that you buy in those takeout boxes. Leftover dumplings and similar little items can go into a healthy soup filled with lots of green vegetables. You can opt for fresh spring rolls rather than fried. </p>
<p>3. If you can convince your kids to make their own pizza, by all means, do so. You just have to buy ready-made pizza dough at the grocery store, and at least you can pick what goes into them. You can put pepperoni you buy at the supermarket, cheeses, onions and tomatoes, but at least you know exactly what goes into your pizza. Then you can pop the whole thing in the oven, and even if you are no kitchen expert, nothing can go wrong with this as long as you keep it at the suggested temperature and time. Also, it shows your kids that preparing food at home is actually fun and can still be tasty.</p>
<p>4. Once you get your kids’ approval of a home-made pizza, it would be easier to convince them to eat home-cooked meals. As soon as you get that chance, you can try involving them in roasting or baking meals, steering them away from fried things. You can show them how to make baked potatoes in French cut to replace the greasy French fries, or you can make microwave popcorn with them. Popcorn is essentially much healthier than French fries or potato chips. Alternatively, you can bake potato chips that you thinly slice from fresh potatoes. </p>
<p>5. You can go Oriental and try a cook-it-yourself meal like the Asians enjoy. All you need is an electric cooking pan that you place in the center of the dining table. If you have one with space for soup in the middle, that would be better. </p>
<p>Then you arrange all the different raw ingredients around the pan, such as fish, shrimp, chicken, pork, beef, and bean sprouts, along with fish balls, squid balls, and other balls. Each person gets the chance to cook whatever he wants on the electric plate, or dump whatever ingredient into the soup. Just prepare some stock beforehand to put into the soup. </p>
<p>You will wind up with a healthy roasted mix of ingredients and a healthy soup, with no excess oil anywhere. Plus, it turns out to be a fun way to enjoy healthy food. To add spice to the experience, you can teach the kids how to use chopsticks and they can use them to maneuver the food into and off the cooking plate. </p>

<p>One of the most common vegetable known for its exceptional health benefits is the carrot. Rich in vitamins A, B, and C, carrots have long been an all-time favorite of the health conscious individuals, particularly because of its ability to improve eye and skin health. </p>
<p>According to studies, a single carrot is so nutritious that it is enough to provide you with all the vitamin A you need for a day. We all know that vitamin A is essential for good eyesight, but do you know that it is excellent for the skin as well? Experts have also proven that carrots possess properties that can help protect the skin from the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays coming from the sun. Therefore, by adding carrots to your diet, you can actually increase the health of both your eyes and skin significantly.</p>

Beta-carotene present in the vegetable is a very powerful antioxidant and helps in defending the body from free radical damage caused by overexposure to the sun. The sun is the number one contributing factor to many skin conditions, and by consuming right amounts of beta-carotene, these effects can actually be prevented or even reversed. According to studies, if you were to take at least 10 milligrams of beta-carotene from carrots each day for one week, you would find a significant decrease of sun induced discoloration and damage in your skin. This means that by eating carrots regularly, you can slow down the aging process tremendously and keep sun spots, wrinkles, and even skin cancer at bay.</p>
<p>However, while the health benefits of carrots may seem undeniable, you should also understand that too much of it can cause some health problems as well. The daily requirement for carrots ranges between 8 and 10 milligrams or one 7-8 inch carrot per day. If you consume more than that amount, you may experience a condition called carotenemia. This condition is characterized by the skin turning yellowish due to over consumption of carrots. While carotenemia or hypercarotenemia is considered a benign condition, its effects can sometimes be permanent.</p>
<p>Over-consumption of carrots can also lead to other health conditions such as liver damage or even heart disease. This is caused by too much intake of vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential to the health but anything taken in huge quantities can be considered toxic no matter how nutritious they are. Experts suggest that carrot consumption should be limited to one 8-inch carrot per day. Furthermore, see to it that you monitor your daily intake of vitamin A especially if you are taking multivitamins on a regular basis.</p>
<p>While most people believe that eating carrots raw is the best way to get the most out of the vegetable, studies suggest that you can only get up to 5 percent of beta carotene this way. If you want to really get the most of eating carrots, you should either boil it or blend it as carrot juice. You may also want to keep your carrots refrigerated, as carrots tend to lose their sweetness when left exposed at room temperature. </p>
<p>If you are suffering from vitamin A deficiency, it would help if you start including more carrots to your diet. After a while, you will begin to see how such a small vegetable can do so much both for your eye and skin health.</p>
